Malahayati’s Midwifery and Pharmacy Study Program Innovation: Red Ginger Transformed into Dried Ginger for Feminine Pain Relief

Lecturers and students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Malahayati University, Bandar Lampung, conducted a community service activity focused on optimizing the use of red ginger as a feminine analgesic in the form of dried ginger. This activity took place in Kebon Jeruk Village, Bandar Lampung City, on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
This program is part of a grant funded by the Directorate of Research and Development, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, through the Community-Based Empowerment Program, based on the announcement of research and community service funding for the 2025 Fiscal Year, number 0070/C3/AL.04/2025.
This community service team came from two study programs: Midwifery and Pharmacy, consisting of Ana Mariza, S.ST., M.Kes and Sunarsih, S.SiT., Bdn., M.Kes (Midwifery Study Program), as well as apt. Annisa Primadianti, S.Farm., M.Sc. (Pharmacy Information Systems Study Program) was assisted by Arin Anida (Midwifery Study Program) and Anissa Fitriani (Pharmacy Undergraduate Study Program).
The activity was attended by 22 participants, consisting of women from the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) from Kebon Jeruk Village. In her remarks, the event’s chairperson, Ana Mariza, explained that the activity aimed to reduce the incidence of dysmenorrhea experienced by 198 (54%) women of childbearing age in Kebon Jeruk Village by utilizing local potential, specifically red ginger, which 50% of the community grows but is underutilized as a non-pharmacological therapy for dysmenorrhea.

This activity is a collaboration between the Midwifery Study Program and the Pharmacy Study Program, Ana Mariza, a team of midwifery lecturers, provided socialization about dysmenorrhea, then together with the Sunarsih midwifery team and field assistants, measured dysmenorrhea using the NRS (Numeric Rating Scale) pain questionnaire. Annisa Primadianti as a service team in the field of pharmacy conducted socialization about the content and benefits of red ginger which can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy for dysmenorrhea as well as training in the use of innovative technology for making dried ginger using technology including red ginger washing and peeling machines, red ginger slicing machines and drying machines with Food Dehydrator Machines. So that the community can reduce complaints of dysmenorrhea by utilizing plants that are around and processed in the form of dried ginger so that it can be consumed whenever the community needs it. As well as minimizing the consumption of drugs in the long term which can cause side effects for health.

The village head stated in his remarks that there had been no outreach regarding the proper use and processing of red ginger. The PKK chairperson also expressed her hope that the community service program from Malahayati University would help the community improve their knowledge, skills, and behavioral changes in treating dysmenorrhea using red ginger, a safe, practical, easy, and affordable traditional medicinal plant, eliminating the need for analgesic tablets.
