Amid the rampant use of single-use plastics, a small and medium enterprise (SME) owner in Graulan Hamlet, Giri Peni Village, Wates District, Kulon Progo Regency, has chosen to return to nature. Reni, a local resident, processes bamboo into various handicrafts that are not only beautiful, but also environmentally friendly and affordable.
Reni has consistently developed a bamboo-based craft business, ranging from bamboo baskets (besek ater-ater), wedding hampers, and bags. All of her products are made by hand, without machines, and using entirely natural materials.
“This bamboo can be made into bamboo baskets (besek ater-ater), hampers, and even batik bags. They’re all made from bamboo,” Reni said when met at her home last Wednesday (August 6, 2025).
The choice of bamboo as the main material was not without reason. For Reni, bamboo is a real solution to reducing dependence on plastic. Besides growing abundantly around her home, bamboo is also easily renewable, grows quickly, and does not harm the environment when processed.
“I chose bamboo because it’s environmentally friendly, reduces plastic waste, and is affordable. I get the bamboo from my neighbor,” she said.
The process of making this craft is quite complicated and requires patience. The harvested young bamboo is first dried in the hot sun for several days, as Mrs. Reni doesn’t have a drying machine. Once dry, the bamboo is cut or slit according to the order’s requirements, then shaped and woven by hand.
“Because I don’t have a machine, I dry it in the sun. After it’s dry and cut, I shape and weave it. It’s all done by hand, so it takes time, but the results are strong and unique,” she explained. Reni’s products are now becoming well-known in Kulon Progo and the surrounding area. She receives orders from the general public, weddings, and even for DIY souvenirs.
Amidst the onslaught of plastic products, sustainable businesses like Mrs. Reni’s are a breath of fresh air for the local economy and environmental preservation. From simple bamboo, great hope for a greener future is born.
